The wit of a four year old

Monday, December 1, 2008, 10:47 AM EST [General]

I would just like to share what my four year old nephew said to me yesterday. My family and I like to consider Sunday as family day, so we try to get together every week. So being the Sunday after Turkey Day, it was time to finish up the leftovers, hence we all over-ate AGAIN. So we're watching the 'I didn't think it could actually be this bad' game and all complaining about the stomach aches that set in. My nephew comes up to me and asks me to play wrestling (otherwise known as me laying on the floor and him doing belly slams on me)...so I explain to him that I'm laying horizontal on the couch b/c of I have a stomach ache. Then he says it, "Aunt Amy I always get a stomach ache when I watch the Bengals too...Daddy says if you turn it off, it'll make you feel better." Just Awesome.

I had basically given up on 98.7 because of the morning show, but I have recently discovered that it is back to MUSIC IN THE MORNING! I am so excited because no radio station even comes close to 98.7. Thanks so much for letting me keep my favorite station. :o)

    Muslims are people too

Monday, December 1, 2008, 03:43 PM GMT [Current Affairs]

"Saying 'Islamic threat' over and over doesn't make it real”

“Years of peddled fear and demonisation have left vulnerable minorities more isolated and the world fixated by a myth”

I have a natural antipathy to extremism of any variety.  The anti-Islam feeling  being fuelled by the media and press and is undoubtedly growing. “ The war on terror” currently being fought in true Orwellian fashion by the inhabitants of “Oceania” has certainly some justification but it could be said that it may just be an excuse by the Ministry of Peace to further reduce the civil liberties of its hapless citizens.

The growing hysteria could be considered to be something of an "own goal"; how can marginalising Muslems everywhere improve things? Dehumanising millions? Does this sound familar at all?

In the forties and fifties the “enemy” was Communism.

    I Heart Twilight!!!

Monday, December 1, 2008, 10:43 AM EST [General]

So I went to see Twilight (TWICE) over the weekend, and I have to say I'm now officially a 17-year-old girl again!  I actually learned about the whole Twilight book series from my 15-year-old goddaughter Kaylah.  She's one of those kids who say that they hate to read.  I'm a big believer that kids hate to read what they HAVE to read, but if you give them a choice, they'll find something they like and learn to love to read.  I took her to the bookstore and she picked up Twilight.  She flew through that one, and the next thing I knew, she had read all the 500+ page books in the series.  She kept telling me how great they were, and now I'M obsessed!

I have to say that I really liked the movie, but I thought the book was MUCH better!  I always think that books are better than the movies, and this was definitely the case with Twilight.  What I did like about the movie was just being able to see the characters that I've grown to love, come to life.  I think Kristen Stewart was great as Bella.  She totally captured her most important traits of being awkward, shy, and clumsy.  I actually saw her in a Lifetime movie called Speak, which was also based on a teen book that I loved.  Anyway, back to the actors.  So the newest teen obsession is Robert Pattinson, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the movie.  After reading the book and seeing him in interviews and in pictures, I was not convinced that he could pull it off.  In the book, they describe Edward as this breathtakingly beautiful man who makes you want to pass out just by looking at him.  I didn't think Pattinson had that look...until I saw the movie!  As soon as he hit the screen, I was sold!  I still don't think he's "beautiful," but I thought he was very sexy!  I feel weird as a grown woman saying that about a guy who's supposed to be 17, but as Ramiro reminded me, he's not really 17...he's A LOT older in vampire years!   As far as the other cast members, I think they did a great job with casting.  I loved: Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper, and especially Alice! And my goddaughter thought Jacob was hotter than Edward!  Charlie was great, and so were Laurent, Victoria, and James as the rival vampires!

I'm really not sure if I would like the movie if I didn't read the book.  To me, the movie just enhanced the book.  There were so many details that were left out, and things that were changed, that I thought were important.  But I guess it's tough to put the detail of 500 pages of a book into a 2 hour movie.  If you haven't read the book, do it.  I never in my life thought that I would want to read a book about 2 teenagers in love and one was a vampire!  If you're a girl, no matter what age you are, you will totally fall in love with Edward and Bella.  Teens will totally relate to the feeling of first love that they felt, and older girls (and women) will remember that feeling of "impossible, all-consuming, 'I will change my entire life for you,' love" that you felt when you were a teenage girl.  You will wait what seems like forever for them to finally kiss.  And will cheer when Edward comes to pick Bella up for the prom!

I'm currently about ¾ through New Moon, the second book in the series, and I called Kaylah last night screaming for her to tell me that Edward comes back soon because I can't take it!  I know...I'm starting to lose it!  I will say that I am so glad that I didn't know about this when there was only the first book because I would have lost my mind waiting for the second one to come out!  Now I can pick up each one as soon as I'm done with the current one.  My only question is...what am I going to do when I'm done with the fourth book?  I guess I'll just have to buy the DVD when it comes out, obsess like I'm 17 again, and be waiting at the store at midnight when it finally does come out!

If you want...check out some pictures from the Twilight Premiere

Pink gets hit at LA liquor store

Monday, December 1, 2008, 10:42 AM EST [General]

Why do some people insist on driving after a night of partying?  Brandon Davis ( that yucky psuedo celeb guy who used to hang out with Paris hIlton) wrecked into Pink's car...and then tried to blame the papz.  From Perezhilton.com...

An allegedly drunk Brandon Davis caused Pink to turn red this morning!

The ex of Mischa Barton and shameful oil heir was seen walking out of a liquor store on Sunset Blvd. at 1 A.M. on Monday, Dec 1st, after a night of pAArtying at the Viper Room.

The Mercedes-driving socialite backed into a BMW 3-Series Touring belonging to Pink while trying to leave the parking lot. The singer's car was seriously banged up, and it was all caught on video by the paparazzi!

After a brief meeting with Pink, both parties drove off of the premises. She did NOT look pleased and was overheard saying she wanted to look at the video of Davis smashing into her car.

    ************************************

...Well, here's hoping he's good for the repair bills.  Rumor has it he hasn't been paying bills around town.  Good thing Pink has enough money of her own.  PS... Did you see her on the AMAs with Sarah McLachlan?  SO AMAZING!

    Thinking out loud 12.1

Monday, December 1, 2008, 10:41 AM EST [General]

Amazing weekend for Cincinnati -- a coronation and then, well, then that.

The UC game probably wasn't the best, but the celebration -- this time maybe a tad late, since, you know, there was nobody around to celebrate when the Bearcats clinched on Friday with West Virginia's loss -- was well worth it.

It was very cool to be on the field as the fans came onto the field celebrating as the Big East championship trophy was handed to Mike Thomas, Brian Kelly and then first Connor Barwin and then more players as they paraded it around Nippert Stadium. Barwin compared it to the Stanley Cup being passed around.

It was an exciting, touching day. The excitement of what could be finally coming true.

    And then, well, Sunday. Ugh.

    * I did get to talk to former Bearcat and current Raven Haruki Nakamura before the game. Haruki said he talked to several Bearcats including Dustin Grutza (his roommate last year) about the game. Haruki and the Ravens got into Cincinnati at 5, so he wasn't able to make it over to Nippert for the game, but was excited to share with his former teammates.

Haruki was also funny talking about how he should have redshirted one year so he could have been there this season for not only the title, but then the Hawaii game and (probable) Orange Bowl.

He also said everyone saw the potential of Tony Pike, but weren't sure it was going to all come together. He also talked about the amazing attitude and leadership of Grutza.

When the Ravens played the Eagles, Haruki said he talked with Brent Celek and Trent Cole and all they talked about was UC and how great it was and how proud they were of their team.

    * Someone noted somewhere that there was a brief moment on the scoreboard Saturday that hailed the Bearcats as "Ohio's only BCS team" -- which may not be the case. The Buckeyes may win a BCS spot because of Oregon's win over Oregon State, bumping the Beavers from the BCS. A UC-OSU matchup likely won't happen (I bet OSU heads to the Fiesta or Sugar), but wouldn't it be fun?

    * Yep, the BCS system sucks. But it sucks less than what we had before, and I don't know that a playoff would be any better. Wouldn't there still be teams left out? We complain every March about who is left out of the tournament, we'd do the same with the college football one, especially if it's eight teams. A BCS conference champ would be left out, or some other deserving team. Really, in the end, yes college football has the worst postseason in major sports -- but it also has the best regular season. That's a fair trade if you ask me. And really, they may make a big deal about the Final Four, but by that time, I my bracket is dead and I just don't care.

    * I'm not sure how fair it is that Oklahoma is headed to the Big 12 title game, but I'm also not sure that Oklahoma isn't the best teeam right now. Here's how they jumped Texas. Interestingly enough, if the Big 12 had the same rules as the SEC, Texas would be in the championship game (or national semifinal, if you will).

    * According to the Chicago Tribune, a Sox-Reds deal is complicated by Jermaine Dye's hefty contract. It should also be complicated by the fact he'll be 35 and is playing on 50-year old knees.

    * Remember 2007 when everyone was crying about Justin Germano being let go and signed by the Padres. Well, the Padres don't have him anymore, either. He signed with the Softbank Hawks of Japan. Another lesson in small sample sizes in baseball...

    * Speaking of former Cincinnati athletes -- Ahmad Brooks was released by the 49ers this weekend. Another nice use of a draft pick, Mr. Bengals GM.

    * Ron Mexico, meet Harris Smith.

Jasmine's "Kali" ORIGINAL Painting, Nutcracker, ACEOs, etc.....

    Monday, December 1, 2008, 09:41 AM [General]

    Hi everyone!

We've been having fun visiting with family this past week or two!  My studio is up and running and (other than the internet connection, which is still dodgy) it's going smoothly.

Even though we've been having fun seeing everybody, etc. - I'm still looking forward to getting back to our "regular" home Florida in a few days - it's so cold here, and there's SNOW.  I don't like cold, don't like snow.  Bah humbug.  We'll be home soon though, and I'll have my palm trees =)  We'll be back up at this place for Christmas though, for sure.  Lots of going back and forth, but now with both studios in operation I'm able to work with no interruption, and orders & shipping will never be affected nor eBay stuff shut down any more - yay! =)

I have a brand new ORIGINAL painting (Kali - a new Hindu piece, and she is READY-TO-HANG!), three new ACEOs,  and the #01 Lt. Ed. Hand Embsllished Canvas print for my "Nutcracker Suite" painting - all starting at ONE PENNY!

First off is the new original painting - "Kali" - quite large at 24" high and 6" wide - and wow, there is a lot of colour squeezed into this one! I've long been fascinated with Hindu artwork - devotional images of the beautiful gods and goddesses with their mysterious blue skin used to intrigue me as a child. Kali - possibly my favourite - an incarnation of the mother goddess - but a VERY powerful force to be reckoned with! She's often depicted with severed heads, wreaking her vengence on those who cross her.... I've taken a more subtle approach and have given her a garland of skulls. I've portrayed her in the traditional Daksinakali dancing pose, and this REALLY is a beautiful painting. The colours are MUCH better and more vibrant in real life. It's a great size & shape -it truly can be the focus of any room, or tucked away in a narrow niche or nook. She is a 24"x6" painting on cradled masonite - which has a 2" deep Gallery-Style wood cradle so NO FRAMING NEEDED - Matt has even put a hanger on there for you already.  She is up for sale on eBay - a seven day auction starting at ONE PENNY with no reserve - ending on the night of Sunday, December 7th at 9:49 PM Central Time and you can see her here:

Click HERE to see my new "Kali" ORIGINAL PAINTING

    Jasmine's Originals!

Next up - the #01 (first in the edition!) Lt. Ed. hand painted CANVAS print for my beautiful "Nutcracker Suite" painting - in plenty of time for Christmas, too!  She's up for a penny auction, 7 days, ending on the evening of Sunday, December 7th at 5:00PM Central time - check her out here:

Click HERE for my "Nutcracker Suite" #01 CANVAS

Next are the new ACEOs - for more info about ACEO cards, how I make them & what they are (basically tiny hand embellished one of a kind canvas prints, trading card sized and highly collectable), consult the individual auction descriptions - they are each one of a kind and are awesome!  All are starting at a penny, with no reserve for 7-day auctions ending on the evening of Sunday, December 7th,  5:03PM -5:09PM Central Time.

To see them ALL together, visit the ACEO section of my store by CLICKING HERE!

    Or individually:

    "Loup-Garou:  Noir" ACEO

    "Mechanical Angel I" ACEO

    & "Snow Angels" ACEO

And finally, since it's "Cyber Monday" for the holiday shopping season - I wanted to let you all know that I'm continuing the FREE SHIPPING PROMO at www.strangeling.com !  This promotion is for website orders ONLY through strangeling.com (not eBay, etsy, etc. - only those placed at strangeling.com) - and YES the free shipping is on any print orders - no matter how many prints or canvases you buy, no matter where in the world you live.  If you live in Antarctica and order 2,300 prints - shipping is still free.  To see my website and get free shipping on prints, just go to www.strangeling.com and click on "Gallery"!

Why it isn't all doom and gloom for the Tories

Monday, December 1, 2008, 03:40 PM GMT [General]

Its been a difficult period for David Cameron and his Tory party. The days of polls predicting a landslide election win for the Conservatives are a thing of the past. Gordon Brown has enjoyed an unlikely revival that has occured with celerity and purpose. His status has significantly improved after his so-called 'heroics' saving the world from economic apocalypse, even his ex arch nemesis Lord Mandelson comparing him to Moses! Heaven forbid! But, as the most recent poll indicates, the Tory party still has a solid 11 point lead and reasonable grounds for optimism that it can win the next election. As the incumbent, Mr Brown correctly or not, will recieve a lot of the electorate's antipathy over the credit crisis, he may be the hero now but for how long? As unemployment rises further and people's misery become more acute, it will be Mr Brown who they will want to bring to account. The Tories have shown admirable fortitude and veracity in their economic policies recently: it's not easy to tell impecunious voters that the party offering them tax cuts is really the bad party, even if it is the same party who will quite evidently foot them with the bill at a later date. However,  the Tories stuck to their guns and reminded the public of 3 imperative things: Gordon Brown is not responsible for the global crisis but is inexorably responsible for the poor position that the UK is in to mitigate its effects, tax cuts WILL be paid for in higher taxes at a later date, and that national debt will double to a staggering one trillion. Put the 3 together and Gordon Brown doesn't quite look the 'economic master' that Messrs Darling and Balls would have you believe. The Tories have plenty of cards to play and must indict Brown on every possible occassion. If they can do that whilst maintaining their status as a plausible and feasible government, then there is no reason why Labour wont be repudiated at the next election (whenever that is) and no reason why David Cameron can't become the next PM.

    More Madness in the Midlands

Monday, December 1, 2008, 03:40 PM GMT [General]

A convicted robber who converted to Islam after being jailed for 12 months has been handed £10,000 funding by Midland police and council leaders as part of their campaign to 'prevent extremism' amongst Muslim youth.

Bilal Davis was given the cash to set up Inner-City Guidance in Birmingham to 'prevent youth offending and radicalisation of vulnerable Muslim teenagers.'

The company is currently £10,000 in debt due to rent arrears. Mr Davis set up the firm after spending 10 years at the University of Medina in Saudi Arabia where he studied Salafi Islam. The university is hailed as a leading centre for the study of the ultra-conservative Salafi interpretation of Islam followed by Al Qaeda members.

Prior to converting to Islam, Mr Davis, who also uses the name Abu Hakeem Bilal Davis, was a member of the black Birmingham gang, Inch-Hi, which became the notorious Johnson Crew, for six years.
